Tick Prevention and Removal

The infestation of ticks is a stressful issue for most pet owners. We discuss here, the various precautions and remedies for the prevention and cure for this parasitic problem, including the established Frontline Spot On and Effipro treatments.

Apart from the regular application of Frontline Spot On or Effipro Spot On, a few simple measures can keep your pets and your homely surroundings, not to mention kids, from being attacked and bitten by these hideous creatures.  Mowing the lawn on a regular basis can go a long way in preventing a tick infestation as well. If you live in a high-risk region, you need a flea treatment for your front yard with preventative insecticides. In case you take your dog for a walk in densely vegetated areas or the playground, try to stay on pavements and pathways. Always try avoiding tall grasses. And last but not the least, start using an anti tick spot on, a spray or an anti pest collar on your dog. The most highly rated of these are Frontline Spot On and Effipro treatments.

Further precautions for the prevention of tick infestation include brushing your dog and checking the coat for ticks as soon as you reach your abode whenever you make trips to the beach, walk the woods or the park. The reason behind this is ticks don not attach to your pet’s skin immediately after it reaches the body. If you follow the procedure above, you have a great chance of finding the ticks before they actually bite. In a worst case scenario, they can actually fall off on your floor and bite you instead. Make sure you check places like your ears, groin, and the hair, inside armpits and in between the toes. These are the most favourite places for ticks to hide out.

The usage of universally recommended treatments like Frontline Spot On or Effipro are a sureshot way to get rid of ticks, in case they have already made way into your home and onto your pets. Frontline Spot On and Effipro contain Fipronil. It is a topical insecticide which kills fleas, its larvae, ticks, chewing lice and other blood sucking parasites. It comes in two different forms, a liquid drop variety which is administered on the skin on the back of dogs and cats, or in the form of a spray. Frontline Spot On and Effipro treatments are the liquid drop treatments. If this liquid is ingested by licking or by accident, you may notice temporary drooling. However, if this lasts for more than a few hours, you should contact your vet for an antidote. Some pets might become allergic to fipronil over time. Before the treatment of animals using Frontline Spot On or Effipro as such, you should get them checked by your vet.

Hailed as the new solution against fleas and ticks, and an innovative anti parasite treatment for cats, Effipro Spot-on is an easy measure in application treatment for cats. This includes the monthly Effipro pipette treatment for prevention and cure, and the Effipro spray for cats for a fast reaction. Likewise, Frontline Spot On has created a niche for itself by winning over most professional vets. Frontline Spot On has an impeccable record in flea and tick treatments. This brand has several products in the market including a flea spray. However, its liquid drop treatment, Frontline Spot On, has become the company’s flagship brand across America and Britain.

Nowadays, completely natural and gourmet dog treats are gaining popularity so much so that many dog owners even bake healthy and nutritious dog treats for their pooches right at home. Which dog food should I buy for my puppy?  With the various dog food brands to choose from and while also taking into consideration the specific needs of each breed or lineage, most owners have met a dilemma as to which dog food should they buy for their puppy. A lot of essential aspects of feeding and the nutritional needs based on each phase of your puppy’s life also have to be considered before coming into a decision regarding the type of dog food to give to your new canine friend.

Which dog food should I buy for my puppy? Here is another clue, puppyhood is the stage in which a puppy undergoes a rapid growth and development and it requires different levels of nutrients. Because they have special needs in nutrition, it is always best that your puppy only receives puppy food until he reaches the age of 1 year. A quality dry dog food would be, in general, the best dog food to feed your puppy since it strengthens your puppy’s teeth. However, the breed of your puppy has a great influence with what food is appropriate; each has its own dietary requirements. This is basically why most of the dog food manufacturers produce a specific formula for certain breeds.

Although puppy food and adult dog food are not the same, it won’t hurt every once in a while to have adult dog food, but not very often. Different stages in a puppy’s life need different nutrients in order to stay healthy. Although puppy food isn’t considered more nutritious than adult dog food, it often has more calcium and has higher protein content than adult dog food. Sometimes, the hardness and size of the kibbles would also matter. Other than that, there is no difference.

An ideal dog food mostly consists of ground whole grain corn, chicken by-product, animal fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), dried beet pulp, soybean oil, dried egg product. Whereas a higher quality dog food contains deboned chicken, chicken meal, oatmeal, ground barley, ground brown rice, tomato pomace, rye flour, canola oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols, a natural source of vitamin e), tomatoes, rice bran, deboned whitefish. A chat with a veterinarian, with a little help from the web, will help you understand thoroughly the needs of your puppy and the contents of the dog food of your choice.

When introducing your puppy to his new home for the first few days, it is a very good idea to feed him the same type and brand of dog food and follow same feeding schedule before you got him. When choosing a new brand of dog food, it is advisable to introduce the new dog food gradually by adding it to the previous brand your puppy has been used to. During feedings, it is not recommended to leave the food out so that your puppy can eat his food whenever he wants to. Feed your puppy on a specific time to have your puppy’s entire body on a set schedule. Provide food three times daily when he is under six months, then twice daily after six months. Always remember to also have water available immediately after feeding your puppy, puppy food because he needs water and drinks in large quantities. A dog can still survive after losing almost all of his body fat and half of his protein mass; but he would die if he loses 15% of his body water. The most important nutrient of all is water.
Which dog food should I buy for my puppy? Knowing the contents of the dog foods you usually find in stores and the exact needs of your pet will help maintain the optimal condition of the new adorable member of your family.

Dog training – a must

Dog training builds good human-dog relationship and the best way to initiate this relationship is by using dog toys. Do you think that dog training is significant? We will scrutinize this feature

Dog training is a significant factor as important as training your child. Dog training is principally founded on a meaningful communication amongst the man and his dog. There is no tie among you and your dog in the beginning. Through dog training you are able to build a bond of relationship with your dog.

Language training:

Dog training is not an easy task. You will have to show lot of energy and fondness on your part. You must also have the endurance to train a dog. Dogs never understand words. You will have to use signs and teach them. You must impart training to the dog only with ten commands. Once you have taught the ten commands your training is over. Just educate it with disyllabic words like heel sit, go, stand, come, etc. The dog, which is your best friend, will understand this very soon and will confirm to be a pride for you.

Potty training:

Toilet training is very challenging dog training. Toilet training will be very frustrating at times. But the last gain is a lifetime achievement. You will have to consistent when you train your dog with potty habits. This training will help your dog develop a positive behavior.

You biggest challenge when you impart potty training to your dog is for you to recognize the signals of your dog when it wants to be potty. When at first you bring in a dog to your house everyone of your family members are very happy and they start playing with the dog. But no one feels that dog training has to be imparted and especially potty training first. So hold this in mind and take up the challenge. Also remember that your dog is like a human being and it will also like to be rewarded when it adheres to your commands. Puppy training pads are a good thing to use when potty training!

Dog training for obedience:

When you are dog training for obedience then you will have to follow certain techniques. They are:

Praise and give reward: You have to praise and reward your dog when he carries out your command. But if the dog goes wrong then correct him. Develop the correct poise for your dog.

The dog initially will not understand what commands you are giving it. But you will have to believe in what you are doing and stick to it. You must give him a simple instruction and make him understand what you want him to do. One of the important things that will help in initiating and successful completion of dog training is dog toys.

You have to be realistic and fair when you give your dog training. You should not punish the dog if he does not do something, which he has not been taught properly.
Let your training sessions be short and fun oriented. Otherwise your dog training like many other dog training will also fail.

Train the dog slowly. Instruct your dog a single command at a time. Never confuse the dog. The next command should be taught to your dog after he learns the first.
You will have to discover out what prompts your dog and go accordingly and every time he responds, provide him with the dog toys you have bought. This will make the entire dog training exercise fun and fruitful.

Training Your New Puppy

Training your new puppy will help your puppy’s behaviour. In this article, you will find relevant information that can help your train your new puppy properly.

Training your new puppy is essential in dog keeping. The first thing you should do once you and the puppy arrive home is to let him smell your whole body. Lie down on the floor on your stomach and call him. By this time, you do not have to call the puppy by his name; you can call him “puppy” temporarily. Letting him smell you will establish a bond between you and him. This will make him understand that you are his new companion and there is nothing to be afraid of.

When training your new puppy you need to establish yourself as the Alpha from the very beginning. Dogs are pack animals, and since he is separated from his mother, you are his new pack. Never let the puppy run your life because this will make him dominant. Set boundaries and limitations in a calm, kind, even-tempered manner. Before deciding on a name, always see if it fits your puppy’s personality. Avoid giving names that are too long for your new buddy to understand. A name with one to two syllables is sufficient. For instance, your pup would understand more if you would say “Barqs, come!” compared to “Barkley Champion of the Pack, come!” When playing with him, keep saying his name in a happy tone.

Since your new canine friend is very active, playful, and can be quite destructive, the best thing to do is to seclude him by using a baby gate or something alike. Don’t isolate him behind a solid door since this will only cause undue stress. Most puppies experience separation anxiety, so it is advisable to set-up an open bed with lots of soft padding and spread newspapers or puppy pads on the floor for his puppy mistakes. Leaving comfort items like a sock, a nightlight, or a toy will also calm him.
Training your new puppy involves lots of playtime and patience. This never involves scolding every time your puppy makes a mistake. Don’t take his nose and rub it in his waste because this will only cause confusion. Instead, let the puppy finish doing his thing, then take a cloth and wipe it up. Create a scent post by wiping the cloth to the newspapers or puppy pads. This will serve as a guide the next time he has to go. Potty training also works wonders for you and your pet. Wait three minutes after feeding him then take him outside to do his business. When he goes to pee or poop, say “Go potty!”. But, until he gets the hang of answering the call-of-nature outside, make sure you put him on a tile floor, not on a carpet.

After you had your puppy vaccinated, teach him to walk on a leash. It is advisable to use a harness and a collar on a puppy on 2 different leashes. Once outside the house, the puppy will start to pull or rush ahead of you. Calmly tell him to “heel” and gently pull back on the leash. It is predictable that he would rush ahead of you again. This time, give one gentle but firm tug on both leashes and say the command “Heel!” Be consistent but generous with praises when he follows a command when you are training your new puppy. Enrolling your puppy in a pet obedience course is also advisable. All dogs who sign-up are required to be vaccinated, otherwise you will end up with a sick puppy. Puppy training is essential and at the end of the obedience course, your puppy will be that reliable and well-trained pet you’ve always dreamed him to be.
