Most people overindulge themselves on Christmas Day while enjoying dinner with friends and family. If this sounds like you, perhaps you should plan a fun outdoor activity to recover from all that overeating. There is a Boxing Day event that promises to be an enjoyable way to work off some of those extra holiday calories. The Fairhaven Woodland & Water Garden will be holding a guided walk with the Head Gardener, and you’re welcome to bring along your dog as long as they’re on a lead.

The Fairhaven Woodland & Water Garden is am 31 acre retreat, consisting of ancient forests, a network of dykes, water gardens and a private broad. You’ll find abundant deer, kingfishers, ducks and otters on the property, along with a wide variety of plant species, including a 950-year-old King Oak tree.

Fairhaven was the brainchild of Major Henry Broughton, later known as the 2nd Lord Fairhaven. The property was originally part of the South Walsham Estate, and was used as a convalescence home as well as a World War II Training Ground for soldiers. Broughton purchased the property in 1946 and moved there in 1947. He designed the gardens himself, and upon his death in 1973 bequeathed the property to remain in Trust for public use. The gardens have been open to the public since 1975, and are open every day of the year except for Christmas Day.

The guided tour on Boxing Day will leave promptly at 11 am, and guests are advised to arrive early to purchase their tickets in time. Adults will be charged £5.00, children £2.50, and each dog 25p. At the conclusion of the walk, Fairhaven will offer participants mince pie and mulled wine to celebrate the day.
